Derrick Rose of the New York Knicks Accused of Rape

Summary: A former girlfriend (whose identity has n ot been made public) of the Knicks' Derrick Rose has accused him of breaking into her home with two friends and drugging and raping her while she was unconscious. She has not filed criminal charges but has instead filed a lawsuit for $21.5 million. The trial will start this October, over three years since the assault. Rose's lawyers are calling the victim's lawsuit an attempt to extort money from the wealthy athlete. Rose claims the sexual encounter between the four of them was consensual. If Rose is found guilty, his career will be damaged permanently.

Connection: This event is connected to the abundance of pro athlete and celebrity rape cases that have been made public the past few years. Rape is a manifestation of the desire for power and asserting that power over someone and violating them. Celebrities and pro athletes are in a position of power and it's easy for them to abuse it.

Questions: How can we educate people on this issue? How can we prevent rape in today's society? Since many powerful people feel the law doesn't apply to them, how can we make sure it does?

  1. If explicit evidence is found that proves Rose did commit rape, not only should charges be held against him but he should be put into prison. We must remember that rape is an act of felony and just because one has power and wealth does not mean they aren't bounded by the law. To prevent more cases of the famous committing such harsh acts, more punishments should be held against them. By doing so, they will be less inclined to commit such acts again.

  2. I think that we should talk more about rape in society and how to prevent it. Also people should report an incident immediately instead of waiting 3 years to report. We need to enforce the idea that people in power cant rape people just because they are famous. I also think that the punishment for rape should be increased.

  3. I think that there is a lot of evidence pointing to the case that he raped his ex-girlfriend. He should be sentenced to jail for that. Just because he is famous doesn't excuse his actions. He should be treated just as any other person would be treated in this situation.

  4. Raping someone is a heavy crime, no one should be forced to be anything unless they want to. Just because one person has more fame and wealth, doesn`t mean that they can get out of trouble and get set free. I think we should talk more about this topic since i feel like everyone has been trying to ignore it and act like it`s not a big deal when it is.

  5. I think that if you can find heavy evidence of Rose committing the crime, he should be treated like any other average person and go to jail, he should have no special treatment. We could discuss more about this topic and not discuss it only when it happens, we could try to prevent it.

  6. In all honesty I think that this whole article is bias. No information in this article defends Derick at all. Also, judging by the discussion questions, your already assuming that Rose is a rapist.

    1. My discussion questions are about the prevention of rape. Nowhere in my questions or connection or summary does it say that he is guilty. I don't have a bias against Rose, but I think this is an important event because it brings attention to all the powerful people that have committed acts of sexual abuse and have not faced the necessary consequences. The article itself (in my opinion) does not have a bias either way.

  7. Instead of arguing whether he is guilty of rape or not,the question "how can we educate people on this issue" is more important. As scary as rape seems, it still seems as an option people take. If schools could include the topic of rape within their Health classes, it would inform students.

  8. I think he should be in jail for a long time so he can learn from what he has done wrong. He should face consequences like everyone else.
