Immigrants, whether legal or illegal, may apply for the U visa if they are victims of certain crimes, including stalking and domestic violence, and if they help law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution. The visa was created created as the "Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000. This act allows alleged illegal victims to remain living in the US while assisting law enforcement. Immigrants are coming from these troublesome backgrounds and see America as their ticket out. However, the strive for the American Dream can can become so critical that people do anything by all means to live there lives out as an American legal or illegal.
