Alaska villagers face dual threat of hungry polar bears, warmer weather

https://newsela.com/articles/polar-bears-alaskan-natives/id/23211/

Summary: This article is saying how the temperature in Alaska is rising extremely high, which affects the polar bears and the Alaskan villagers. It affects the polar bears because the ice is melting faster which leads to the polar bears traveling farther to catch food. It also affects the Alaskan villagers because the polar bears would go look for food in their homes. Additionally to the dual threat, Local and wildlife activist also reported that, there are two ways to help store food properly to prevent people or polar bears getting hurt.

Connection: It connects to the Industrial Revolution because factories would have mass production manufacturing and the need of fossil fuel to keep them running. The burning of fossil fuel will go into the air, which will cause global warming. The global warming that affects the animals, plants and the Earth.

Questions:
- What are your thoughts about global warming?
- What do you think we as a high school student can do for the polar bears?
- How you feel if the polar bears came to your house looking for food?

  1. Global warming is an absolute, scientifically proven fact that is a huge problem. Rising sea levels (.14 inches per year http://ocean.nationalgeographic.com/ocean/critical-issues-sea-level-rise/) are a risk to the habitats of millions of animals, including humans. There is also the problem of the rising temperatures, which can be seen in California with extreme drought conditions. High School students must be taught to conserve energy. We can care for the polar bears by not outputting toxins in the air that will melt their habitats! If a polar bear came to my house, I would not feed it nor confront it directly.

  2. I feel terrible for the polar bears and the Alaskan villagers affected by global warming. I think it is a huge problem and as high school students we need to conserve more energy. For example, using less lights/turning off lights not being used or unplugging cords from outlets. If a polar bear came to my house looking for food, I would feel a little nervous and shocked--mainly because they are wild animals. However, I wouldn't give them any food because it could potentially harm them.

  3. I believe that global warming is becoming more and more of a serious issue, and that people all around the world must contribute towards solving the problem. As high school students, I believe we should try to conserve power and fuel and use more clean alternative energies in order to stop polluting the environment. If I ever saw a polar bear near my house, however, I would be terrified.

  4. I think that not everyone realizes how bad global warming is. Global warming is seriously affecting the environment. As high school students we can still try our best to raise awareness about global warming and inform others on how to prevent it from getting worse.

  5. Global warming is undeniably occurring, regardless of the ridiculous amount of people who do not agree with this statement. My thoughts on global warming are that people should conserve natural energy with more precaution. This is world is failing and it is up to everyone to save it.

  6. I saw a Planet Earth documentary recently on this, the polar bear was forced to try and catch a walrus for food after having to swim in melting ice for days. The polar bear didn't succeed, and died of hunger. Despite the loss, I believe the widespread attention of this documentary will help convince someone to not drive today, or turn off the burner, which will help the environment, even just a little bit; all little bits add up.

  7. Global warming is undoubtedly a bad thing and I don't think the problem has been properly addressed. We are the next generation so it's important for high scho9ol students to get their voices heard. By simply raising awareness about the issue; a high school student is making a small but significant action. If a polar bear or any animal in general came to me in search of food, I'd be really sad because it may mean that their natural resources are unavailable or drastically decreasing.

  8. Honestly, I think everyone here has pretty much said everything. I wish I could say more on the topic but I'd just be repeating what everyone else has said already.
Global warming is a serious issue in our world today, a serious issue that not only effects us, but the whole word, people and wildlife. We all (all countries) need to make an effort to slow it down and stop the terrible effects in can have on our future and that starts with education. Learning about what even one person can do to contribute and help.

  9. Global warming is very scary and its harming our wildlife. Its a serious issue and as a high school student we can still make an impact by getting the word out. We should learn what we can do and if a polar bear were to come to my house im not sure what I would do

  10. Global warming is a huge issue that I feel we need to address more. Even today, many people still believe it is just a myth, even though the evidence is clear and unmistakable. As high school students, I think we could try to raise awareness and maybe even money to help protect the polar bears.

  11. The issue of Global warming has been increasing drastically over the years, it is dangerous and will eventually lead to extinction of animals because they no longer have a habitat.

  13. I feel global warming is a serious issue that we should start to focus more on. People today are still saying that they don't believe that it's real; when in reality it is and is happening right in front of us. As a high school student we can tell others of what's going on and inform them that it's real and happening.
