Police kill a black man in LA

Summary: On October 1st, the LAPD fatally shoot another black man, that is the third black man to be killed in the past 5 days while interacting with police. His name was Carnell Snell Jr. and he was only 18 years old, and he was shot for fleeing a vehicle with a paper license plate. People in the community have asked the LAPD to investigate the shooting. The LAPD have announced that an investigation will occur to see if the deadly force was necessary and that they will look and see if there were any criminal charges involved.

Connections: It connects to racial segregation in the 60's because white people treated African Americans poorly. It connects to racism because every time we hear about police shootings that end up killing someone, it's always a white police officer and a black man it's never a black police officer.

Question: What do you think influenced this shooting? Do you think racism has changed?

  1. I do not think the racism has changed, and white people are still racist.

  4. I don't think racism is getting better but I do think that there is more awareness about the issue. I don't think that shooting was necessary

  6. Racism has not changed. Something needs to change because there are too many black people getting shot by the police.

  8. What I think that influenced the LAPD to shoot the African American male was that he was black. In my opinion I think racism still exist in our life today, because African Americans have been getting killed every week for no reason.

  9. I think that what influenced the LAPD is stereotypes. Stereotyping is looked down upon but it still remains in the best of us in society. Although unsaid, everyone stereotypes, and it is not the best if we are going to try to promote peace. Racism has not changed the least bit and I do not think it will for a long time. It is very hard to get rid of within and society because as long as people continue to promote things like black gangs in movies, our next generation will learn to fear black people.

  10. I say that racism has changed dramatically, but racism is an opinion, therefore its what people think of another race. Sometimes peoples parents even brainwash their kids into thinking that their race is superior. These cops live with the moto of "its their life or mine" and thats why all these killings are happening.

  13. I think the racism hasn't changed that much because they was no reason to shoot and kill the man just because his license plate was made of paper, so in my opinion they killed him just because the race he was and the color of his skin which is totally unexceptable

  14. Racism needs to end, the fact that this is the third one in five days shows that this is racism. Again, they could've pepper sprayed him or tazed him instead of shooting him. This shows racism and the cop should be fired for this

  15. I agree with Vincent that the influenced shooting was caused by stereotypes towards black people, which very often leads to the death of many victims of racism. I think racism has not changed, seeing that past events in the 1900's are still happening today and are not progressing anywhere towards finding a peaceful solution.

  18. i believe the shooting cannot be determined becuse there is a highly biased side.LAPD is know for brutality in the past with african rap group NWA,which can be depicted as racism.Because of history such as this,it is hard to determine where the good and bad cops are and what was justified and what was not.

  19. I think that the ignorance of the "police officer" was the influence of this shooting. Racism hasn't change and probably will never change if we continue to have these ignorant, worthless, unprofessional police officers who kill people instead of protecting them.

  20. i agree with Elijah because racism hasn't changed officers have all these stereotypes about African Americans so they kill them instead of protecting them.

  21. What I think influenced the shooting was the fact that the suspect fled from the police instead of compliance with the police.

    1. He wasn't fleeing from the police, he was going to get the paper drivers license because he got pulled over for not having one, so the police probably assumed that he stole the car because he was black.

  24. I think that racism will change but it will never fully go away, and if that does´t happen, then it will get worse and worse since Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton is in the election.

  25. i still think that racism has not changed at all, and i don't even think it will change.

  26. I believe that racism hasn't changed, I don't understand why the police officer had to shoot him if he was just running out of a vehicle, and the fact that it's the 3rd black man to be killed in the past 5 days is scary and not something they should be proud of.

  27. I believe that there is still a lot of segregation even though people may say there isn't, but in reality there is still a lot of racist people in the world. i think that the shooting is causing lots of problems between black people and white.
