New York Police Officer Kills Mentally Ill Black Woman

Summary: Police officer Sgt. Hugh Barry shot and killed a mentally ill black woman after she failed to comply to Sgt Barry's orders to drop a pair of scissors and attempted to hit him with a bat. The shooting caused mass outrage. Sgt Barry was striped of his gun and badge after this incident. Many are arguing if this was a self defense move.

Connection: This connects to the unfair shootings in the South by the Klu Klux Klan. in 1865, the Klu Klux Klan started to terrorize African Americans because they started to gain power and rights.

Discussion: Do you think that Sgt. Hugh Barry was right to shoot her. Is this considered self defense.

  1. I don't think It was the right thing to shoot her in any way especially since she was mentally sick. The fact that he took serious matters like shooting a mentally ill person for self defense reasons is harsh and a little off the occasion. Obviously, self protection is needed but unless your life was really in danger there was no reason for the officer to shoot at the sick woman.

    1. i agree.people with mental health issues should have a little more emphathy.however,we must also understand that the safety of the officer depends on how he or she reacted to the situation and how they should be reprimanted afterwards

  2. I think Sgt. Hugh Barry did not have the right to shoot her. She was mentally unstable which means that there was no possible way she could control herself. However, she didn't need to be shot as a way of "self defense" because it's unreasonable and uncalled for. There are other methods that could be used to control someone besides death. This happens too often and is very sad to hear.

  3. I don't believe that it was right for St. Hugh Barry to shoot a mentally ill women. I don't think that it was considered self-defense. There are many other ways to help the mentally ill women instead of shooting her

  4. I feel that in a way this was self defense because she had possession of scissors and a bat which are very harmful if not used properly. Shooting her was a way he could've handled the situation, but not the smartest because it took a life. The fact that she was mentally ill is a reason why he should've helped her out a little more by maybe talking to her or trying to convince her to put down the two weapons. I think the officer could've tried a little more to save the women instead of just shooting her.

  5. While he was protecting himself, there were probably some other ways he could have tried to protect himself before shooting her. Especially because she was mentally ill, the police officer should have been more patient with her; he should have tried other methods of stopping her before killing her.

  6. They should've just pepper sprayed her or tazed her but shooting her that's all bad. There's a better way of handling it, and killing person isn't the best thing to do

  11. Although it may seem like self defense, Officer Barry had other options which are less violent than killing the mentally ill woman.

  12. For a police officer, a gun should be their last resort. They have numerous ways of protecting others and the people around them without using their guns.

  13. No I don't believe this is right, she doesn't have the right mindset and can't comprehend his orders. Like Talar said, the gun is very last resort and he should be able to restrain her and talk to her without using the force of a gun.
