California Farmers Backed Trump, but Now Fear Losing Field Workers

Summary:

Before being put into office, many of Trump's supporters in California were located in the Central Valley. After being put in office, Trump has not backed down from his desire to ban illegal immigrants from being in the United States. Many California farm owners who supported Trump before are now backing down and fear the loss of their workers. Approximately 70% of farm workers in the US are living here illegally. The removal of illegal immigrants would drastically affect agriculture today. Not being able to pick and sell crops would be a huge loss for the State's (California) economy. California brings in $35 billion a year in crops and provides more of the nation's food than any other state. Farmers who voted for Trump now realize that if the administration were to actually weed out illegal workers, their businesses would cripple.

Connection:

Illegal immigrants are sometimes looked down on by people. However, illegal immigrants are important when it comes to agriculture. Back in WWII, African Americans and other minorities were looked down on but they helped immensely in the war efforts.

Question:

1. How important are illegal immigrants in agriculture?
2. If the removal of illegal immigrants were to happen, who would replace their jobs?
3. Do you think the removal of illegal immigrants is a priority that Trump should focus on?

  1. illegal immigrants are very helpful for the U.S. agriculture because they do most of the work which brings us a lot of money. I don't think white people would replace illegal immigrants so the work would not get done. i don't think this is a priority trump should focus on, there is better things he needs to focus on

  2. I agree with the priority part; Trump is preying on the fears of working class America. Many of these guys are not criminals, so there is no reason why they should not have an easy process to become legal, besides lack of organization and care from the government.
Also, top quality post P +1.

    1. Yea, Trump should be focusing on important things and not about immigration. The farmers that work on the farms work very hard and most of them are not criminals. Illegal immigrants are very helpful for the US because they are willing to do work that others won't.

  3. Illegal immigrants are important to economy since they do the jobs most people would not do. Immigration is not something Trump should main focus on

  4. Illegal immigrants are important to the US economy because they are willing to do jobs no one else wants to do. If the removal of immigrants were to happen, than lower class citizens would have to do those lower paying jobs. Trump shouldn't prioritize this act, there are more important tasks ahead of him.

  5. illegal immigrants are very important to the economy because they are the ones who are working the hardest which brings the US a lot of money. i think that trump should focus on other things then just banning immigrants because if he does ban them then the economy will fall to the ground because nobody would want to do the jobs of illegal immigrants.

  6. Illegal immigrants in the United States play a huge role in our agricultural work force. They make up 70% of our farmers, so if they were to be all taken out of the US, even if only half of them were taken, that is a huge and crippling blow to our agricultural work force. The only people who could potentially replace them are our legal immigrants and the poor of the country. With their combined efforts we could possibly replace all the workers we lost. I think that Trump Doesn't need to focus on the removal of illegal immigrants at all, in fact we should actually put more effort into finding a way to make them legal.

  7. Illegal immigrants most likely are the most important aspect of the agricultural world in California. Without them our economy would crumble and there is a possibility of the creation of a food shortage. I think Trump should focus on stabilizing the economy before he decides to remove all illegal immigrants. Until then we should let them continue their work in the fields since no one else seems willing to take the agricultural jobs.

  8. If illegal immigrants were removed, then Americans who have a guaranteed minimum wage would drive food prices up. In addition, finding people who want to work farm jobs is incredibly rare, making illegal immigrant cheap labor a boon for the economy.

  9. Illegal immigrants are an essential aspect to American agriculture. The removal of these illegal immigrants will inevitably lead to a decline in crop output. Additionally, these workers will have to be replaced by legal American citizens, which will cause a huge increase in crop prices. The removal of illegal immigrants should not be a priority of Trump due to the backlash and byproducts of his plan, such as the loss of perfectly capable farmers.

  10. Illegal immigrants play a part in our daily lives. The food we eat and the hard jobs people look down upon are often taken by immigrants. I am unsure of who would replace illegal immigrants since they typically take on unpopular jobs. Without immigrants, there will be a whole cycle of businesses, consumers, farmers, etc affected. I think that instead of costing on removing illegal immigrants, trump should focus on helping illegal immigrants follow the path to citizenship and improving heir lives. He's focusing on the negatives and now taking a look at the situation completely.

  11. Illegal immigrants play an important role in our economy. Without them, our agriculture would not thrive. If they were removed, those jobs are unlikely to be replaced because of its status. It is sad to say that agricultural jobs are made for them, as they are willing to work such types of jobs. I do not think that the removal of illegal immigrants should be Trump's priority, for there are much more important matters at hand.

  12. Illegal immigrants are helpful to the U.S agriculture because it brings us more money.I don't think U.S citizens can replace hard workers like illegal immigrants because they don't have the same training for this kind of work. I think Trump should focus on other things than banning illegal immigrants because if he tries to ban them then the economy will go down.

  13. Illegal immigrants are super important to our agricultural economy because, as said by many other people who commented, illegal Immigrants are willing to do jobs that not even half of Americans will do here in the U.S. These illegal immigrants do these jobs in order to keep their families from suffering from hunger or from having being homeless. I believe that no one would be able to replace the jobs that illegal immigrants do. Americans would not be willing to because they are humble jobs. Trump should not focus on the removal of the illegal immigrants but focus on who will do all these jobs for him to "Make America Great Again" by keeping illegal immigrants in the U.S.

  14. Most people that work in our agriculture economy are immigrants and loosing them will lead to a lot more problems. Clearly Trump can't remove them because they are such a huge part to society

  15. If were to lose immigrants then it will cause more problems and I do not believe that this should be his top priority and he won't be as focused on resolving this issue. He should worry about who fill in the empty spots and fulfill the duty.
