Summary: On February 16th, US Immigrants around the US went on strike to protest Donald Trump's immigration laws. Many businesses, especially restaurants were 7.1 million of its workers were immigrants, had to close for the day due to a lack of employee's. But, even employers joined in on the strike, putting up signs that their store was closed in supports of Americas immigrants. Other stores and restaurants showed support by actually remaining open, to show customers how important the work immigrants do is. Immigrants from all professions decided to join in on the strike, not just ones working in restaurants. Sanjuana Gonzales moved to the US when she was 18 years old and put herself through community college by working as a farmer. She eventually earned a master's degree in health care administration and now works for the Travis County government, managing contract for social service programs. She, too, participated in the strike that took place on Thursday.

Connection: This ties back to our unit on immigration and how immigrants were treated when they first arrived in the US.

Questions: Do you think the strike will have an effect on Trump's immigration policy? What would the US be like if all of a sudden all of our immigrants disappeared? How would the disappearance of our immigrants affect our everyday life?

  1. I do not think the strike will change Trump's mind because he probably is not even paying any attention to them.

  2. I dont think it will have an effcet on Trumps immigration policy but it made it apparent to many people the role that immigrants play in everyones lives. Without immigrants a lot of things that people normally take for granted would change. Immigrant do a lot of the labor intensive and low paying jobs that most Americans wouldnt do like farming.

  3. I don't think the strike will have an effect on Trump's stance on immigration. If all immigrants disappeared then the only people left in America would be Native Americans since the rest of us are all immigrants or descended from immigrants. I do hope these protests continue so Trump can see how many people disagree with him and are ready to fight back.

  4. Trump has already made his mind up, and will continue to put into effect the immigration policy even though many people are against it because immigrants do a lot of work for this country.

  5. I don't think this would affect Trump's policy because that's exactly what trump wants the attention and what he will end up doing is ignoreing them. I think the U.S economy would take a huge hit if all the immagrints were to get deported and go back where they came from.

  6. I do not think this will affect Trump's policy on immigration. By deporting the immigrants, America's economy and status would take a hit and it would be hard to rise from that. But, this strike, and others, could gather up more supporters to oppose Trump's policy and maybe even change his stance on it.

  7. I do think that if it goes on for a very long time it would change something because it would appear everywhere, since all the work is done by immigrants. if immigrants are deported is going to have a major impact in the U.S.

  8. I don’t think this single solitary strike will affect Trump or his policy as he will most likely ignore them (which he shouldn’t, no explanation needed), but when this becomes a movement (high possibility of it happening too) then we may be seeing him respond. The US will most likely face a failed economy if immigrants disappeared suddenly because they take the jobs that most citizens would likely not, and most of those jobs benefit everyone (take farming as example). Without them I don’t think everyone would live a desirable life, I see people trying to do what they do and I think they won’t do very well.

    1. I agree with what you said about Trump not responding to the strike. With the way our president has been acting, the likelihood of him actually giving a response is very low. I also agree that the US would face a failed economy if immigrants just disappeared. After all, the history of the US started off with immigrants.

  10. I think this won't affect Trump because he will just ignore this. The U.S will be empty most of the U.S. is just immigrants more than half of the places would be shut down and other places will be empty like grocery stores and many others.

  11. I do not believe it will change Trumps view but I think it will open everyone else eyes up and change peoples prospective. If all the immigrants were suddenly gone it would change the economics and the life of the americans. Lots of things are done by immigrants or products are produced by them.

  12. I think it was good to show people that our country is made up of immigrants but i don't believe it will change the way donald trump thinks of immigrants in the US. The US economy and regular life of an American would change dramatically because lots of immigrants do jobs other wouldnt. Immigrants most of thww time do all the hard jobs or dirty work.

  13. The dissapearance of immigrants would harm the US's economy. I believe americans are going to have to do all the work they dont want to do, such as farming, janitorial jobs etc.I dont think Trump is going to do anything about it though since he's been acting ignorant and doensn't realize his actions have consequences.

  14. I don't think the protest will have a direct impact on Trump or his policies since he is blinded by his opinions but the protests do show people that immigrants do have an impact on the US. Some argue that immigrants are taking away jobs from Americans but these jobs are typically ones that others do not want to or would not like to do.

  15. I think getting rid of all of or immigrants would impact our everyday life because they are a big part of our country and they make up a lot of what we are and what we stand for.

  16. I dont think this will effect Trumps immigration policy because something like a strike will not change his mind as he is hard headed and extremely set in his ways. If all immigrants were to disappear it would have a huge impact on the US. Immigrants play an essential part in the economy as they have so many jobs and help in so many different ways that not everyone realizes, like trump.

  17. The strike should have an effect on Trump's immigration policy because it opens eyes to how much of America's employees are actually immigrants. The US would be significantly worse without immigrant workers because they make up such a big number of employees. The disappearance of immigrants would impact our daily lives because of things such as not having enough employees to cover shifts to keep restaurants, grocery stores, etc open.
