Drug Scare

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/23/world/asia/arrest-duterte-leila-de-lima.html?_r=0

Summary: A Philippine opposition senator and a harsh critic of President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs has been arrested by law enforcement agents after charges were filed in court due to illegal dealings with drug dealers inside the country's prison.  This happened when she was the justice secretary during the 2010 administration of the the past president.  Although she denied all charges, she states that this is all a political vendetta since she has led the investigation of the alleged extrajudicial killings of a number of drug suspects in Davao city while Duterte was still the mayor of that city.

Connection: I think this connects with the red and the lavender scare because a lot of people have been accused and have been brought down because of possession of drugs. While the lavender and the red scare people afraid to be accused of communism and being gay while people are afraid of being accused of possessing drugs.

Question:
1. Do you think the senator, that was accused of possession of drugs, was being truthful and this is all a political vendetta?
2. Do you think that there is a hidden agenda with Mr. Duterte's actions if so what are they and if not why do you think not?

  2. I have witnessed Sen. De Lima serve for the country and I could tell you there is no way she is involved with drug lords. She fulfilled her duties and served for the country as best she could (there is a reason why people voted for her as senator, her performance as justice secretary in the Aquino administration was very satisfactory). I say this is a political vendetta because from what I know, charges were pressed against her as soon as she demanded an investigation on Pres. Duterte's extrajudicial killings, meaning she is against the president's "war on drugs" (she is a justice and rights defendant). Knowing the president's way of acting, he would do his best to get his opposition out of the way and that's what happened to Sen. De Lima.

PS: I was kind of baffled by this arrest because they instantly got an arrest warrant for her but former president Gloria Arroyo's arrest warrant took years (it is definitely not her "sickness"). I don't know, probably another exposure of the true colors of the Philippines's justice system.

  3. I do not think she was in possession of illegal drugs, especially considering her duties as a senator. This is an outrageous claim made by Duerte. He is basically ruining his name by making extremely out of hand accusations.

  5. there is always a hidden political agenda with these sort of things and it always have. I don't think the senator is connected with any drug lords but, I'll put my bet on if there's any evidence at all

  6. I don't think the senator was in possession of drugs. She's the senators and as a senators she has many responsibilities and being associated with drugs isn't one of them. I agree that this issue is very similar to the lavender and red scare.

  7. I believe that the Senator would not be in possession of drugs. To be a Senator, she should not be associated with drugs and to be in a position that high, they would not be in possession of drugs to risk their position in the government. They would not be that careless.

  8. I do not think that the senator is associated with the corrupt nature of many figures in political positions in the PH, and this just seems like another accusation based on opinion about the senator. I think President Duterte is trying to keep the public on his side like the Red Scare because Du30 gained his presidency using the same ideas of erasing drugs and corruption from the PH.
