Mexico is ready to hit the U.S where it hurts: Corn

Summary:  Mexico Senator Armando Rios Piter has announced that he will be making a bill that will only allow Mexico to buy corn from Brazil and Argentina. This is a big threat to the US because Mexico is the top buyer of corn and without them, it will send a huge impact on U.S farmers. Recently American farmers sent $2.4 billion of corn to Mexico. The reason behind this is because Senator Armando Rios Piter said: [Its] good way to tell them that this hostile relationship has consequences, hope that it changes." This is another way of Mexico showing its willingness to Trump's threats. Trump wants Mexico to pay for the wall and he has threatened taxes on Mexican imports around 20 - 35%.

Connection: This connects to the embargo on Cuba since 1962 signed by President John F. Kennedy. This embargo has affected the U.S economy a lot. The U.S Chamber of Commerce disapproves the embargo, saying that it costs the U.S $1.2 billion annually in lost sales of exports.

Questions:
1. Do you think this bill will be successful? Why?
2. Who will it affect the most?
3. Do you think Trump should resolve the problems with Mexico?
Bonus: Who do you think should pay for the wall? Or should there be a wall? 💃

  2. I obviously think Trump should resolve the issues with Mexico, especially since they are so close to us and are important in trade.

  4. I believe if Trump keeps his terrible global policy the same, Mexico will approve the bill in order to spite the US. This means that the US needs to fix their relations with Mexico in order to stop this impending problem.

  5. I believe this will really hurt the US and is important because it is $2.4 million in the farming industry. It will effect the US overall but it will directly effect the farmers selling to Mexico. I believe it should be resolved between Trump and Mexico because this is effecting a lot of different things not just the Corn and farming industry.

  6. I think the bill is a good idea, but will not be effective enough. This bill if it were successful, would most likely affect the farming and food industry. Trump should definitely find a way to decrease tension with mexico.

    1. continuing...It will not be effective enough because it the farming industry will most likely find another country to sell corn to.

    2. Remember Mexico is the 2nd TOP buyer of corn. They recently sold $2.4 billion of corn to Mexico. Without them it will send a huge impact to farmers.

  7. I believe it will be successful because Trump has given a lot of motives for Mexico to react like this and making the bill to only allow Mexico from buying corn only in Brazil and Argentina. It will affect the U.S. because of their farming process, Mexico won't be buying corn from the U.S.
I believe Trump should just be friendly and forget about the immigration process and building the wall. Trump has threatened Mexico a lot and it is time for Mexico to do it. If Trump can do it why can't Mexico? Trump should def. end good terms with Mexico and end all of crazy ideas.

  8. I believe that this bill would be successful because it would be the first step that Mexico can make through tackling the huge tax that Trump has put into place with Mexico. Hitting farmers since Mexico buys most of it's corn from there. The ones producing their crop won't have as much of an export to Mexico and would loose that large amount of money through that trade.I believe that trade would not be accepted or would be changed at any means throughout the term because of his views and problems with Mexico

  9. I think that this bill will be effective and that it will cause negative tension with mexico. I think that trumps decision to build a wall will only cause more negative tension with mexico and that it will only get worse.

  10. The Bill would be a more negative than a positive effect on America since Mexico is our close neighbor and we trade with them a lot. What would be the point in forcing Mexico to only buy corn from Brazil and Argentina. We only ever benefit from the trades we get from Mexico
