Kansas Supreme Court Says Kansas’ School Funding Is Too Low

Image result for kansas supreme court education funding

Summary: On Thursday, March 2nd, there was a unanimous ruling by the Kansas Supreme Court deciding that Kansas’ education funding was “unconstitutionally low”. This has created a problem for the governor, Sam Brownback. The extremely low budget for public schools has been negatively affecting black, hispanic and poor students, which has resulted in declining test scores, along with graduation rates. The lawmakers have until June 30 to create a new formula for budgeting which will have to solve these problems. Kansas’ budgeting for schools has been called out twice this year now, which shows how big of a problem it has been.

Connection: This connects to segregation in school in the 1950’s, because it endangered children’s education and their right to have the same education as the white children.

Questions: Do you think schools should get more funding? If this were Aragon, how would you react and what would you do? How do you think the lawmakers should solve this problem?

  1. I feel like schools should get more founding in order to get all their students to succeed. And i would feel very disappointed in the fact that my own school cant provide for me. I think law workers should do as much as they can to get these schools money in orddr to get these students to succeed

  2. I agree that schools should get sufficient funding to ensure that their students succeed. Actions should be taken so that everyone, regardless their background, have the opportunity to graduate and move forward with their education.

  3. I think schools should definitely get more funding. Lots of programs are being cut and students are not getting exposed to things that they would love or help them pick the right career.

    1. I agree because I also believe children that go to school aren't getting to be able to have access to the resources they need to choose a career that interests them.

  4. Schools should definitely get more funding, or should I say, the fund for schools shouldn't be cut off (based from the implementations of the legislator mentioned in the article). It will be harder for the students to succeed if they barely have the resources they need because by cutting the resources off, they are also trying to limit the things they need to learn to succeed. The lawmakers SHOULD do the best they can to supply these essentials to help these students face the brighter future that they have ahead of them.

  5. The schools should obviously get more funding. Lower test scores and higher dropout rates are not something that is desired. The Children are the future of the US, and if they are not given the opportunity to learn and succeed, America will not grow and succeed. I would not be happy if my school had so little funding. Lawmakers need to realize how much money it takes to run a good school

  6. yes, I think that schools should be given more funding because its important for kids to be exposed to many of the thing that are being cut. I agree with princess on the note that students need these resources in order to succeed.

  7. I think of course schools should be getting more funding because they educate the future. If it were aragon I would be very happy for more funding. I think they should take money away from solar subsidies since it is businesses they need to attract and put the money into schools instead.

  8. Schools need more funding obviously, but funding comes from tax dollars and many people dont want to pay more taxes. I think if it was a perfect world, everyone would be happy, but the case is that right now schools need to work with anything they can get, even though it isnt fair.

  9. Schools definitely need more funding, but the level of true necessity depends on each school and the area they are in. For some schools, the people in the community simply cannot afford to donate or help provide. While it would be extremely helpful for Aragon to receive more money, our school is well off considering what other schools have. It would also help if schools used the money they receive extremely carefully and not waste it on unnecessary items.

  10. I think that schools who need the funding should get it. The necessity should be dependent on the community's economic standing, as communities of higher income should not need more funds. If Aragon were to be facing such situation, I believe that the school district as a whole should definitely ask for the funding from the state, and demand that there must be a way of regulating the need for funds. I think that lawmakers should take into account the community's economic standing before distributing money because it is important that money goes where it is needed and not to where it would be of no use.
