KKK recruitment fliers distributed across three states in two days

Article:   Ku Klux Klan recruitment fliers were distributed throughout towns in North Carolina, Illinois and Maine this week, triggering condemnation across three states from religious leaders, lawmakers and concerned residents alike. Pamphlets touting a KKK faction known as the Confederate White Knights were discovered Sunday morning throughout Gaston County, North Carolina, including outside homes in Cherryville and Dallas near Charlotte, the Gaston Gazette reported. Hundreds of miles away authorities, confiscated roughly 25 Ku Klux Klan leafless left that same day outside residences in Manteno, Illinois, south of Chicago, according to the local Daily Journal.

Connection: This article about the rise of the KKK in America connects to our current section on life in the U.S. during the 50's. Racism in the 50's included segregation and racism, which was carried out by organizations such as the KKK.

Questions:

1) Why do you think that there is still racism in America today?
2) Why do you think that the KKK is on an uprise again?
3) What can we do to prevent this?

  1. Racism only exists because we say it does. ... However the white people live in fear of the black people because they don't want to be racist or a bigot. Indeed racism is only a matter because we keep bringing it up and it more leaves white people affected. To prevent this I think we can all come to an agreement to treat whites and blacks the same and combine into one as a whole.

    1. I agree with Davion because as he stated "Racism only exists because we say it does" is completely true, it's this sense of fear that has been created from past events that has lead to racism STILL existing today.

  3. Racism has been prevalent the instant America declared itself a nation. It is an issue that taints America now and in the near future. Trump's inauguration does not help with this matter. Thus, racism is still present in the United States today due to people's, especially white people's, tendencies to condescend upon African Americans. The KKK is not necessarily on the rise as their organization has been around in hiding for the past half century. It is not possible to prevent their "uprising"; however, we can lessen their impact through deeper investigations on their whereabouts.

  4. Racism exits in America today because many people suffer from a superiority complex. Racism has been implemented in many people's mind and President Trump is only promoting this due to the recent immigration plans. The KKK is uprising to further expand a feeling of superiority and instill fear in others. We can prevent this by promoting unity and putting aside differences

  5. Racism will always exist in everyone's mind, although I highly doubt they'll get an upraise again because of how they are today. To prevent this, is to continue our path towards unity and not prejudge so harshly

  6. I think there is still racism today because people are mostly taught things like this. No one is born being racist. They learn from somewhere or someone. And this will continue happening if people keep deciding to be so cruel.

  7. Racism still exists in the US today due to the fear of difference, and the fact that our new president, Trump, is promoting people to be afraid, and hate 'un-American' things, when in reality he means non-white people.

  8. Racism still occurs today because people are mostly taught bad things, yet we aren't born racist. People learn to hate 'un-American' things making them think they are superior.

  9. I think racism continues to occur in present day because we don't learn from the past, even though we have a class dedicated to learning history so we do not repeat the past. I think majority of racism starts from how children are brought of from their parents. Children repeat what they hear which is not their fault. I think the KKK are uprising again to make their superiority aware to everyone which is going to cause a lot of trouble. What we do to prevent this is to treat everyone the same as we do and to not pass down racism into the new generations. What happens in our world is because of us.

  10. I think that racism still exists today due to many factors. One major factor is that some people think they are more superior because of their race and although that's not what majority believes some have been raised to think that way. I also thing that peoples views are tainted by what their parents or others around them believe.

  11. Racism will continue to exist for as long as there are those who believe that one race is superior to another. I choose not to think that the KKK is on an uprise, however it is possible. We can prevent the spread of racism by choosing to accept and respect one another.

  12. I think that there is still racism today because not everyone has the same emotions, which might be the principle cause to racism. The KKK is not at an uprise. Just because they send out a flyer to join does not mean that they are going to take over anything. The KKK only exist because america has so many different groups, from the LGBT to the KKK etc, thus so many people with different thoughts, decide to join a crowd. I do not think we can prevent this because if the government tried to interfere, people might think they are getting their rights taken away.

  13. i think racism in still in america today because their are families that are teaching hate to their kids. they are teaching kids to hate these people and one of these families live in the white house. they are supposed to be a example for american families, but not a very good example. the KKK is on the rise again because the president is teaching hate, while a lot of people are against it they're a lot many people for it. And the group would be the KKK. we can stop this by putting pressure on them to stop. we need to put a positive impact in our community, and if we do that it will stop.

  14. I think there is still racism in america because of what our history looks like or was. No races have chnaged just laws but that doesnt mean people agree with them. I also agree with kennedy because families could raise there child a differant way then let them hate.

  15. There is racism in the US today because people will always have differing opinions and the civil rights movement that outlawed racism is still relatively new. The KKK might be on the rise again because of the election of Trump. Although this is an assumption with no back up, the small, quiet group of racists could have been influenced to turn vocal after Trump was elected. We can only continue to look down upon the idea of racism and wait for it to die out.

  16. The KKK ain't gonnna do anything, and I agree with Davion, racism does not really exist, that is only what people say.

  17. I think there is still racism because there's always been racism; I do think our president has brought out the racism in our country, but I don't think he necessarily made it terribly worse. He contributes to racism by his comments, which has allowed supporters to represent and show their racism.

  18. I agree with sonia, that racism exists in america, but I feel that it exists everywhere. Racism stems from moral prejudices and from free judgemental thought. I think that deep down in our hearts there always going to be cultural stigmatism, but it's us that wants to express or suppress it.

  19. I think racism still exists in America today. It might have been nonexistent a few years ago, but thanks to Trump he has proved that it is still alive and well. No one was really racist and open about it but now they feel like they have support from Trump. Nevertheless this is about racism not Trump, they are on the rise because now they have enough support throughout the country. It could possibly also be because we have a Republican in office and the KKK was originally formed because of Abraham Lincoln, a Republican. We shouldn't do anything about this. The KKK is a terrorist organization so it should be up to the authorities to take care of this and keep us safe like it should be.

  20. i think that racism still exists because most people don't agree with the laws that makes us equal. i think that the KKK is on an up rise again because of the election of trump. i think that the authorities should take care of it before things get out of hand.

  21. I do believe that there is still racism here today and its everywhere, Especially stereotypes. I think the KKK is on the uprise again because of the election of trump and he is racist. I think we can vote him out of presidency.

  22. I think the KKK is on a rise again because they probably feel supported by trump. I think racism still exists because it was so popular years ago, families passed down these beliefs to their children and so on. I think to prevent this KKK members should suffer serious consequences.

  23. I think there is still racism in the United States because there has always been racism and there has always been a race that thinks they are superior than others. I think the KKK is on the rise again because what our president is doing. It is indirectly causing people to act this way.

  24. I think racism continues to live in America because some people were raised on the idea that African Americans were not equal. With these people still having these beliefs they can spread it to future kids and continuing the cycle of this. If people accept the new morals of today's society then I think we can reach a point in our society that we no longer profile people or stereotype someone just because of their ethnicity. The rise of the KKK can be due to the beliefs of the new President and what he's doing to people of different races.

  25. i think that racism still exist because a lot of people were being taught and raised like that and they might be taught wrong and think that people are not equal and fair.

  26. i agree that racism still exist today because we as people and teenagers keep bringing it up and joke about it, but if we just left it alone their would be no racism.
