South Korean president removed from office over corruption scandal

Summary:
On Friday, March 10, 2017, the South Korean President Park Geun-hye was removed from office. Her role in a corruption and influence-peddling scandal led to all 8 justices on the Constitutional Court to vote to uphold the impeachment of Park which was passed in December. It was concluded that she had leaked confidential documents to Choi Soon-sil assisting her in extracting bribes and asking big businesses for donations.

Connection:
This event relates to US history because of the situation with Richard Nixon during his second term. In 1993, there was an Arab oil embargo, gasoline rationing, and a continuing series of revelations about the Watergate scandal. The escalation of the scandal cost Nixon a lot of political support. In 1994, in the face of impeachment, Nixon resigned from office.

Questions:
  1. Do you believe that her impeachment was an appropriate punishment?
  2. Why do you think she tried to help Choi Soon-sil obtain money?
  3. How can this situation be avoided in the future?

  1. I think that impeachment was the appropriate punishment because if someone does something wrong the law must be followed. Especially the president. These kinds of situations can be avoided by screening a President more carefully, and I think that Korea will slowly learn as they are still early in the Democratic system.

  2. I believe that the impeachment was an appropriate punishment because of the impact of corruption called for a reaction. The president is not excluded from the law and this sets an example on future presidents and expectations of them. We can avoid these problems by more thorough background checking and more thorough investigations on the presidents and their actions.

    1. I agree that the impeachment was an appropriate punishment because of the corruption this caused. I also agree that these problems can be avoided in the future by conducting more background checks to ensure the safety of those under the rule of the president.

  3. The impeachment was an appropriate punishment. Any position of power, especially that of the president's, carries the responsibility of keeping important information hidden from the public. Any evidence that suggests incompetence should result to punishment, in this case impeachment. She probably helped Choi Soon-sil obtain money in order to receive a cut herself. This situation can be avoided in the future through performing regular checks on the president to make sure he is on track.

  4. This punishment was definitely appropriate because receiving bribes is not right and it affects the people of the country. After the example used from the punishment of Guen Hye, other presidents would be scared of bribes and stay true to the government.

  5. I agree with everyone that the impeachment in this case was appropriate. Anyone that takes bribes should not be trusted to be in a powerful position. She was dangerous in the sense that she could be bribed to do negligent things that could have affected innocent people.

  6. This was definitely the best form of action to take. Corruption should be removed as soon as it is noticed to keep the people happy. I do not know why she was helping him to get money, but I think we can avoid this by having stricter surveillance of political powers.

  8. Integrity in office is extremely important, and a person that has no integrity should not be able to hold a job in office. Therefore, this impeachment was completely necessary. Background checks and consistently checking up on a person in office can help prevent these actions.

  9. I believe if there was evidence that she did something corrupt then yes, it was right for her to be impeached. I don't think this situation could really be completely avoided but i do think they can make stronger background checks on people

  10. I think her impeachment was necessary because a an office cannot function without trust. What she did was corrupt and her actions deserve a punishment. I don't think there is anything that will ensure that a situation like this wouldn't happen but I agree with other people and support the idea that there should be stricter background checks

  11. I agree with Lauren's comment that it's important to get rid of corruption, but I feel that every politician is corruption one way or another. It's just that this is a bad apple among the rest. I feel that since every politician it essentially corrupt and wants power and money, we should hire people with no ties to political and economic power.

  12. I think the impeachment was a necessity because violating rules require punishment and impeachment was the right thing to do.

  13. I do believe that what she got is what she was going to get because of the scandal of delivering top secret files to the hands that it should not belong is a major problem when dealing with the protection and security of the government. I also believe that the need for donations as being the main reason to get the money so she can do what she wants with it. (I'm just working off of what was given). I believe that there should be people who should be on top of things like this so that they can catch someone who is doing the act of these bribes and illegal document sharing to put an end to it before something bad happens to it.

  14. I think that the impeachment was justified and that she should be penalized for what she did. I dont think this situation can be easily avoided in the future

  15. I think that an impeachment was the right thing because someone who takes bribes and is corrupt should not be the leader of a country. I do not think that corruption is something that can be completely avoided in the future.

  17. I think impeachment is the right thing to do because getting impeached is pretty hard to do unless you are doing something bad intentionally. Which is what she did
