Summary: Toronto schools have stopped planning field trip to the US due to Donald Trumps new travel ban thus causing some students to not be passed through the border. This decision was passed by the Toronto District School board when Trump administration tightened. A spokesman of the boards later stated, "we don't want to put our students in the position of traveling down to the border with their friends and classmates on a trip and then being told they cannot enter the U.S. for no legitimate reason". For the trips already books, they would be carried on, but no further trips would be planned. He also stated that on any trip where a student is denied access through the border, the entire trip will be canceled, and if this continues then all field trips will be cancelled for the remainder of the year until further notice. It is also later stated that many international students aren't applying to US. colleges, meanwhile the numbers are increasing for international students applying to schools in Canada.

Connection: This current event connects with Angel Island and Ellis Island because many of the immigrants weren't allowed into the US and were sometimes even humiliated in front of others.

Questions:
          1. Why do you think some student wouldn't be allowed to pass through the border?
2.How long do you think this travel ban will last?

  1. Why would any student be stopped from entering the US? They're not travelling from any of the six countries listed, and they're not immigrating to the US. The Toronto schools need to do their research on what the ban actually outlines.

  2. I think that some students were not allowed to enter the United States because they were some kind of ethnicity that Donald Trump has excluded. This travel ban will last until someone stands against the President. I think that whether we like it or not, this is the path we are on and if we don't do anything about it, it will only get worse.

    1. I agree with Vincent, I believe that there are some students whose race is excluded. I don't know how long this travel ban will last. But I think Canada will strike back at Trump's ban.

    2. I agree with Vincent and Michael due to some students due to their race are excluded from events.

  3. I think this is more of a statement towards donald trump and his policies but I'm not sure why they should cancel the trips. like donal said, it'd not like the students are immigrating; they are simply going on a field trip.

  4. I think the reason why certain students are not allowed to pass through the border is because they are of an ethnicity from one of the countries Donald Trump has banned. I think this ban will last until someone with major power in the government can step in and stop the ban. I think that Donald Trump would not listen to just simple citizens with no major power in the government, so what needs to happen is an increase in major political figures who are willing to stand for whats right and fight Trump's insane policies.

  6. I believe that certain students aren't being allowed into the countries due to being of a certain race or ethnicity. I think it will last until someone in power can successfully stop Trump's travel bans.

  7. The travel ban has not banned any certain ethnicity, and I'm not sure where any of you guys have heard that a certain race was banned. It stops travel from 6 countries and refugees from entering the US. It's a dumb rule, but nowhere does it mention anything about excluding a certain ethnicity from entering the US. Thank you Alaina for being knowledgeable on the topic.

  8. Not being able to do a normal school activity such as going onto a fieldtrip only because of your race is rude and so discriminating. Donald Trump's ban has been taking such a large impact and affecting major parts of people. I don't think the ban itself will last too long because people will become fed up with it and begin to protest.

    1. I agree, because people are already getting tired of this ban, and it's only a matter of time until the ban is overthrown.

  9. Canada has much more relaxed immigration policies than the US. In light of President Trumps recent attempts to make our immigration policies tighter, many fear that people of Muslim descent might be detained at the airport and not let in. The travel ban does not directly affect the Canadian students, but since the ban clearly targets a certain group of people, the government has decided it will be safer not to go to the US.

    1. Can you provide evidence that Canada has more relaxed immigration policies than that of the United States? Canada actually has a requirement that you must either have a family member or be proven to be of economic benefit to the country. The US, in a very similar manner, gives preference to family members and those with economic skills. Both have systems where you can self-petition for a "green card" or Canadian equivalent, or apply for refugee status. With this in mind, I challenge that you can fairly make the claim that Canadian immigration is "much more relaxed."
Thanks for being open to new ideas and constructive criticism :)

  10. Toronto schools are afraid that their students of Muslim origin will get detained. However, the ban will not prevent a certain race from being banned, but a group of people that are from that country.

  11. i believe some students may not be able to come over because of the religion or race. which is unjust but i do not believe this will end anytime soon. WE know how trump is and the way he thinks. i do not believe this would be right thing for trump to do on keeping this.

  12. It's unfair to stop students from doing normal school activities such as going on field trips because of their race. Trump's ban is affecting a lot of people, hopefully more people will begin to protest to get the message across that what he's doing isn't okay.

  13. I think some student wouldn't be allowed to pass through the border due to racism and unreasonable judgement from immigration officers. I also agree that no matter what we do, it can only get worse.

  14. Some students wont be allowed to pass through the border because of people judgement and all of the racism that is happening currently. I think that as long as Trump is in office it will continue to put bans on who travels and where.

  15. Some of these students were probably not allowed across the border because of overall racism. And I think this would last until the end of this presidency

  16. I feel like although some student weren't permitted to enter the US, it was probably a bit of a protest. Toronto possibly didn't feel comfortable sending their students to such a close minded country like the US, or that it was not safe for the students. I'm not sure how long the travel ban will last because theres no way to predict that.

  17. Even though the travel ban wouldn't technically effect field trips, I believe that Toronto has canceled them simply because they don't want their students in such a close minded environment. In a way it's more of a protest to Trumps immigration policy rather than a fear of being detained.

  18. Some students will not be able to cross the border mostly because of their race, this ban i think will eventually end with time

  19. i agree with sophia and think some students will not be able to pass because of their race and because of some students not being able to travel. I think that eventually when enough people feel this is wrong and petition against it, it will end.

  20. Thank you to Donal and Alaina for actually reading the specifics of the bill. The reasoning many of you present for cancelling trips in illogical; the ban has nothing to do with race or ethnicity or religion. It also does not prohibit vacationing or visits, only immigration. I could see how this is making a statement about Trump's policy. However, I'd like to remind you all that the travel ban was blocked by several judges and it is unlikely it will go fully into effect any time in the near future. Also, to address claims about close-mindedness: I urge you to research on your own Canada's immigration policies. You'll find they aren't quite as inclusive as people imagine them to be.

  21. I believe that students will not be able to pass just because of their race. If racial laws about African American slavery can pass over time, this will eventually blow over as well.

  22. I think that some student might not be able to cross because of some laws that donald trump is trying to pass and also because of their race. I think that their will be bans because of trump and the things he trying to do while in office.

  23. I think that some can't pass because of race or if they "can be of any danger to others". But they should have a right too pass. I hope the travel ban can be lifted soon because this is just causing anger to others in other countries.

  24. I think that some students are unable to pass through because they come from one of the 6 countries that have a travel ban ongoing. And I think there will be a travel ban end eventually but not anytime soon.

  25. Some students may be unable to pass through their border because or their race or whether or not they are U.S. citizens. I believe this ban will last for a short period since many people are voicing their opinions against Trump's decision

  26. Some students are unable to pass the boarder purely because of their race. I think that this bad will be gone soon because as a whole, the human race is getting more accepting of one another and people as a whole are getting less racist.

  27. Some students may not be able to pass the border because of their race and this ban I think will eventually go away because more and more people are more than just one race and the huge thing right now is human equality.

    ReplyDelete
  28. They probably can't cross the border because of how they look or their race. It hopefully will go away soon because it's stopping people from entering this country. It's so hard to get in this country now, and I hope that they lift this travel ban.

  29. The travel ban won't last for long is all I'm gonna say but I don't think trump is keeping students out because of their ethnicity
